This past week, I participated in an eight-day medicine and health care program at Georgia Tech through National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC). The program included guest speakers, medical lectures, simulations, dissections, leadership sessions, and so much more. I want to be a doctor someday, and this experience taught me that being a doctor is about so much more than being able to diagnose and treat a patient; it is about helping others, and being able to empathize with people from all different walks of life without any hesitation. It is about constantly having patience and being understanding. I took away so much from the medical aspect of this camp, and I now have a better understanding of what a career in medicine will actually be like.
NSLC also taught me so much about leadership. I learned that sometimes, it is good to stand back and listen rather than talk. I learned that leadership involves connecting with and understanding yourself and everyone around you. And most importantly, I learned that in leadership, you have to be accepting of different personalities and views.
Throughout the week, I met so many talented people and learned so much. NSLC was an amazing and unforgettable experience, and I will carry it with me in the future.
